Understanding Grief

Carol Bedard (MS, MA, RN ~ Providence College, School of Continuing Education and an SJV parishioner!) provided wonderful insight tonight into...

UNDERSTANDING GRIEF
Carol expressed that grief is a natural and essential part of human life, not something to be avoided or ashamed of. She discussed the 5 stages of grieving and how we can help a loved one who is experiencing a significant change or loss by offering emotional support and providing practical assistance. Understanding grief can help us all face the reality of loss...deal with the feelings that accompany it...and go on to recover and grow! Thank you Carol!

Catholic Belief or Modern Fiction

Was Jesus really married to Mary Magdalene? Did the Catholic Church suppress various secret Gospels that “tell the real truth” about Jesus and the early Church? Did Deception and politics determine which books were included and excluded from the Bible?

These are questions that some readers of Dan Brown’s best-selling novel The Da Vinci Code are asking. And with the worldwide debut of director Ron Howard’s film version of the novel coming in May, many others are certain to be exposed to the sensational claims which call into question fundamental orthodox beliefs about Jesus and the Church.

To help separate the Catholic truth from fiction, the Catholic Communication Campaign (an activity of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops) has produced Jesus Decoded, a new hour-long documentary that presents clear and accurate information about the person of Jesus, his disciples, and the formation of the books included in the official canon of the Bible. www.jesusdecoded.com

OPEN DISCUSSION NIGHT
for Parents of Teens
The SJV Adult Faith Formation Team would like to thank the group of parents who met tonight to discuss ideas for future programs within the parish for both teens and parents!
Some of the hot topics of the evening were:

  • Healthy Teen Relationships
  • The need for effective parenting techniques
  • Safety and Technology (the Internet, IM, cell phones)
  • Fostering an active youth ministry

The Adult Faith Formation Team will take the input from tonight's discussion and continue to look for appropriate speakers to come to SJV. Please add your comments concerning possible speakers or topics of interest to this blog posting! Happy Parenting!
